Chapter Summary

Proverbs 18 may be the chapter most focused on speech. Almost every verse touches on words, listening, or the consequences of what we say. Verse 21 makes the stakes unmistakably clear: death and life are in the power of the tongue.

Verse 13 is a direct rebuke to one of the most common failures in human communication: he who answers before listening, that is his folly and his shame. We live in a culture that rewards fast opinions. Proverbs says slow down and listen first.

The chapter ends with one of the most celebrated verses in all of Proverbs: there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. In a chapter about the power of words to wound or heal, Solomon closes with the image of a friendship deeper than family.

Jesus is Proverbs 18:24 in the most complete sense. He is the friend who sticks closer than a brother. He wept at the tomb of his friend. He did not just offer comfort. He reversed death. Verse 10 says the name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe. At Lazarus's tomb, the name of the LORD was spoken into death itself, and death had to yield.
