Chapter Summary

Proverbs 17 is one of the most human chapters in the book. It deals with the textures of everyday life: family tensions, friendships tested by adversity, the exhausting company of fools, and the relief of a cheerful heart.

Verse 17 is one of the most beloved in all of Proverbs: a friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. True friendship is not conditional on convenience. It is most visible precisely when things are hardest.

Verse 28 closes the chapter with a dry observation that has made people smile for thousands of years: even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise. Silence is available to everyone and yet chosen by very few.
