Proverbs 3 may be the most personally beloved chapter in the entire book. Its opening verses have been memorized by millions: Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.
The chapter then expands on what wisdom looks like in practice: honoring God with your wealth, accepting his discipline, being generous to those in need, living peacefully with neighbors. It is one of the most complete summaries of a life well lived in the entire Bible.
Verses 13 through 18 are a hymn to wisdom itself. She is worth more than silver, gold, or rubies. Her ways are pleasant and her paths are peace. She is a tree of life. Solomon wants the reader to understand that wisdom is not a burden. It is the most beautiful and fruitful thing a person can pursue.
Abraham is the supreme example of Proverbs 3:5 to 6. He trusted the LORD with all his heart and did not lean on his own understanding. He acknowledged God in the most extreme circumstances imaginable, and God directed his path to an outcome no one could have anticipated.
