Chapter Summary

Proverbs 20 opens with a warning about alcohol: wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler, and whoever is led astray by them is not wise. The chapter does not mince words about the way intoxication strips away discernment.

Verse 5 is one of the most insightful verses about human nature in all of Proverbs: the purposes of a person's heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out. People rarely reveal their true motivations directly.

Verse 24 poses one of the chapter's deepest questions: a person's steps are directed by the LORD. How then can anyone understand their own way? There is profound humility in this verse. We are not as in control as we think, and that is a freeing truth.

Esther is Proverbs 20:5 in action. Her heart's purpose was deep water, not immediately revealed. She drew out the king's intentions with patience and insight before making her own known.
