Chapter Summary

Proverbs 12 returns to the rapid-fire couplet format that characterizes the heart of the book. Verse after verse presents a contrast: the wise against the fool, the honest against the deceitful, the hard worker against the lazy.

Nearly half of this chapter deals with speech and honesty. Verse 17 says an honest witness tells the truth. Verse 18 observes that reckless words pierce like a sword but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Verse 25 is one of the most humanly tender observations in all of Proverbs: anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up. In the middle of a chapter about great moral themes, Solomon pauses to note the extraordinary power of a simple encouraging word.
